A clear day saw Ashburton College send 12 keen skiers to the Aoraki Ski and Snowboard Championships held at Mt. Dobson. College entered two boys’ teams and one girls’ team to take on some stiff competition on a tight and challenging giant slalom course. Racing was conducted over two runs with final results based on combined times for individual skiers. Will Kelly was the best of the Ashburton skiers, finishing 4th in the boys’ placings and 5th overall.
Maximilian Pelzl, Brynmor Workman and Cameron Pearce also earned themselves places in the top 12 of 26 boys skiers with two clear runs. Max, Brynmor, and Cole Beeman completed the quartet with Will Kelly to take first place in the boys’ team event. Though completing only the one run after an unfortunate fall on her first, year 9 student Mya Johnston’s second run time of 49.59 seconds show her to be one to watch in the future. The mixed teams’ event was taken out by Twizel Area School, Mackenzie High School placing second and Mt Hutt College taking third. The girls’ team’s event saw Craighead Diocesan take out the podium places. Thanks go to the parent help on the day and the Mt.Dobson volunteers for their organisation of the event.
